The economic and social evolution that has taken place in China in the last 30 years has transformed the most populous country in the world from a backward agricultural economy to a world economic power. At the same pace, all over the world there has been the technological evolution, which has seen in the invention of computers, mobile phones and internet some of the most revolutionary innovations in the history of mankind.
At the turn of the new millennium these three elements have finally merged and that’s how smartphones were born. It is clear that cell phones have now become an integral part of our daily lives. In fact, we do not separate anymore from them, just as if they were an extension of ourselves, real prosthesis.
Interestingly, nowadays mobile phones are used for everything except for phone calls. There is also to underline the fact that the Chinese population communicate almost only with itself. All major social networks and media such as Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram, Gmail (used in the rest of the world), are inactive in China, unless a VPN is used.
The purpose of this project is not to negatively criticize the society of the smartphones, but to document one of the most revolutionary inventions in history and be a sort of provocation that opens up to the debate in a constructive way, without demonizing its use. My intent is to create a true portrait of our contemporaneity in a country, China, which more than any other has seen in recent years a vertiginous economic ascent and is totally projected towards the future without remorse.
